About Stockbridge…

Like most areas in Edinburgh, Stockbridge began life as a village. Unlike a lot of Edinburgh, it has kept its village atmosphere and community spirit. Located on the north edge of New Town and merging with Inverleith to the North West.

One of its major attractions is the Water of Leith river. A long, winding stream running through Edinburgh and emerging at the shore of Leith itself.

Schools

Stockbridge Primary School is one of the most popular in the area. Big on parental and community involvement, the school has become a central hub for Stockbridge people and events. It also won the Eco-School Silver award and has strong ecological values.

Businesses and Amenities

The area was once known as a bargain hunter’s paradise. With small music, junk and craft shops dotted along the cobbled streets. These days a lot of that has given way to more upmarket stores selling antiques and artisan products. But there remains a good selection of the old style shopping to give Stockbridge some variety. There are also several charity shops along Comely Bank.

Stockbridge is well known for its independent delis, tea houses and small eateries that attract workers from the nearby businesses every lunchtime. And in the evenings, especially in the summer, the streets are lined with outdoor seating where locals enjoy a drink and some alfresco food as the sun goes down.

Free time

Stockbridge sits on the corner of Inverleith, meaning it’s just a short walk from the Royal Botanic Gardens. These gorgeously kept grounds are home to a huge range of trees, plants, flowers and other features. It’s easy to spend hours just wandering around, sitting under hanging branches or enjoying a coffee from the Garden Café.

Another of Stockbridge’s most popular attractions is the Water of Leith. The river is the most well-known in Edinburgh and has been utilised perfectly as a walking trail and cycle path. It’s also a great way to access other parts of Edinburgh without having to walk through town. For a relaxing evening out, there’s nothing better than a bike ride along the river to Leith for a quiet drink on the Shore. Or you could take a stroll beside the water to Dean Village, under the Dean Bridge and past the old mill buildings.

Transport

As a central and popular location, Stockbridge boasts many transport links to the rest of Edinburgh and the surrounding area. Bus services run regularly to all parts of the city, including Waverley Train Station. And on nights out you’ll never be far from a taxi rank. But the best way to get around, if possible, will always be by bike alongside the Water of Leith.

As you can see, it’s no wonder Stockbridge is such a hit with families and young professionals. What’s more, there’s a great range of properties on offer. Stockbridge’s architecture is a classic example of old Edinburgh buildings, with a few new models thrown in.
