About Edinburgh’s New Town…

Forget the name. Edinburgh’s New Town was built in the 18th century and boasts some of the most beautiful neo-classical architecture in the UK. The cobbled streets, Grecian pillars and heavy brickwork stand as an icon of Scottish guile and achievement.

Originally built to solve the overpopulation problem in what is now called Old Town, New Town has since become possibly the most desirable place to live in Edinburgh. The interiors of the buildings, with their high ceilings, decorative friezes and stylish trimmings, have become symbolic of high-end Edinburgh life.

Schools

New Town is a bit of a walk from the nearest schools. But this is a blessing in disguise as it means the schools are in locations that give the children the room and freedom they need. The New Town area is served by St Mary’s (Edinburgh) RC Primary and the Royal Mile Primary School. For older children there’s St Thomas of Aquin’s RC High in Chalmers Street and James Gillespie’s High in Lauderdale Street.

Businesses and amenities

New Town’s central location means you’ll never be far from whatever business or service you need. Princes Street and George Street are a few minutes’ walk away. Which means you’re just around the corner from the likes of Harvey Nichols, Jenners Department Store, St James Shopping Centre and Princes Mall. There’s also a huge range of upmarket clothing outlets and boutique shops selling everything from soap to lingerie.

Going out

This area is probably the most popular in Edinburgh for nights out. The seemingly endless choice of bars and pubs on George Street, not to mention nightclubs, provides everything you need to unwind at the weekend. And if you prefer a quiet drink, Rose Street makes for a charming location to sit outside with a cold beer or a hot coffee in the early evening.

For days out, you couldn’t be in a better place. Apart from the shopping, you’ll also be a stroll away from Old Town, where you’ll find museums, tours and of course Edinburgh Castle. Below the castle is Princes Street Gardens, perfect for a summery day of lounging around. Beside it you’ll find the Scottish National Gallery, with its beautiful architecture and constant influx of exhibitions. And towering above it all is the National Monument of Scotland on Calton Hill.

Bear in mind, this is just a fraction of the attractions on offer. You could live in New Town all your life and not see everything worth seeing.

Transport

Again, New Town’s central location makes it ideal for public transport. As well as Edinburgh’s highly efficient bus system, there’s the new tram system running along Princes Street and Waverley Train Station just beside North Bridge.

So it’s no surprise New Town boasts such desirable properties. With all this on offer, who wouldn’t want to live there? Check out our selection of Edinburgh New Town properties now to see where you could be starting your new life.
