About Newington…

Newington began life as one of Edinburgh’s suburbs, housing the bankers, lawyers and merchants of the day in large Georgian townhouses. Many of these still stand today and give Newington its historic atmosphere. The area is currently home to a comfortable community of young professionals, families and students who want a quieter life away from the city centre.

Just a short walk from the Meadows and the centre of town, Newington is popular with people who work in the city and want easy access to everything in and around Edinburgh.

Schools

Being one of the more central historic suburbs, Newington has a range of schools within walking distance. Sciennes Primary School is a good example. Built in 1892, this historic school teaches over 600 pupils in 21 classes. It contains a large hall, a library, ICT centre, science base, a swimming pool in the basement and an outdoor classroom / garden. There is also Preston Street Primary School nearby, as well as Grange School of Ballet and Bellini Cookery School.

Businesses and Amenities

Newington sits at the south end of Clerk Street which runs all the way to the Royal Mile and the City Centre. This street is famous for its character and community, as it’s home to numerous charity shops, delis, barbers and takeaways. As well as a fishmonger, a fancy dress shop and the famous Mosque restaurant.

In the other direction is Cameron Toll Shopping Centre, where you can find a large supermarket, phone shops and various clothing outlets.

Going out

The student population in Newington isn’t huge, but it is enough to ensure some very pleasant and reasonably priced bars and restaurants are never far away. The Abbey is popular with those who love real ale, homemade food and whiskies from near and far. The Reverie also does good local food and puts on entertaining music nights, especially for jazz enthusiasts. No. 1 Grange Road is a good choice for a traditional Scottish breakfast or a quiet drink away from the main street. And for some Italian cuisine you can’t do much better than Positano. This Newington Road restaurant does a great selection of classic pizzas and pastas and has an impressive wine menu.

Leisure

Newington sits quite close to the Meadows, one of the most popular parks in Edinburgh. This huge expanse of grass and cycle paths has a fascinating (and slightly gruesome) history, and is now a great place for a picnic, a game of Frisbee or a casual stroll. It also makes a beautiful walking route into town from Newington, especially in the winter snow. Newington is also not far from the Royal Commonwealth Pool and Arthur’s Seat.

Transport

Like all of Edinburgh’s historic suburbs Newington is regularly serviced by buses and taxis, though it’s only about a 20 minute walk into town.
